Property Watch: Why Be a Landlord When You Can Be a Lakelord?

A stately tudor along the Portage Bay waterfront has its own dock, where three floating homes rent slips.

This tudor revival offers something more than the typical waterfront home: a maritime community. Set behind the vibrant floating homes along Portage Bay, the property’s dock isn’t just recreational, it’s residential, too.

The home is plenty cool on its own, of course. The brick facade, decorated with inset latticed windows and two hipped dormers above, stands tall above an oversized front yard with breezy coastal landscaping.

A bevy of archways starting with the front door cascade throughout the house. Another arch leads from the foyer to the living room, where a classic tudor revival fireplace has an inset Gothic arch mantle above. On the back wall, a picture window provides an uninterrupted view of Portage Bay. Glass doors on either side lead right out to a large back deck to get a closer look.

Nobody’s knocked out any walls over the years; the house still has a separate dining room and, beyond that, a separate kitchen. It has its own entrance to the back balcony to make barbecues easier. (Consider it a kind of outdoor hallway). The home’s three bedrooms are upstairs, including one with its own arched nook.

The driveway winds all the way around to the back of the house, where a two-car garage awaits along with a tiered backyard with raised beds. Steps bisect the yard and lead down to a dock. There’s enough room here for your own watercraft, but there’s even more space for your cool neighbors: three floating homes that rent slips along the dock. You’d do well to familiarize yourself with floating home landlording—because of the unique responsibility of renting out a slip for a building that’s permanently hooked up to utilities, there are specific guidelines, including a carve-out from the state’s ban on rent control.

This unique neighborhood layout—waterfront homes hosting floating ones—continues down the shoreline, but most of the neighbors don’t have nearly as much open space to play with.
