While the Fremont flagship manages to fit multi-sport equipment and a skate park under one roof, the online arm of the retailer offers a broad selection and well-compiled gear stats. Consider visiting during a slower weekday for faster service.
ProSki Seattle
The city’s longtime backcountry specialist on Aurora also does season rentals of inbounds gear and shop work, all with a chatty locals-first vibe. Though the sales floor is small, the stock runs surprisingly deep—and staff expertise means you're better off asking for what you need than browsing aimlessly.
Sturtevant’s
Two Eastside locations serve a wide range of snow-ready goods, including Nordic, backcountry, rental, and kids’ setups. This is also a good destination when you need specialized bags and luggage for big ski or snowboard trips.
Mountain to Sound Outfitters
West Seattle's local ski shop knows that the hardy residents of its isolated neighborhood go hard in paddling as well as on the ski slopes. Stock includes Nordic, backcountry, and downhill resort gear, plus a selection of car racks to get everything to the mountain (or, of course, the sound).
Alpine Hut
For half the year, Interbay's outdoor center is dedicated to all things bike, including service. But when the weather shifts it's ski time, including gear tune-ups and season ski rentals. Their rooftop tents encourage multi-day adventures.
Play it Again Sports
With so many locals chasing the newest gear, there are a log of great used skis, snowboards, and boots floating around. Play it Again buys used equipment and pays on the spot; though they also sell new wares, there are great deals hiding in the used racks.
REI
Don't forget about the behemoth of outdoor activity; the downtown REI flagship carries Nordic and all kinds of downhill skis, along with every form of apparel and accessory imaginable. Check online for the full selection, since only a fraction can fit in-store.
Cripple Creek Backcountry
The new outpost of a small Colorado chain opened in Fremont in late summer, an alcohol permit already in the works so the space can serve drinks and host events along with selling lightweight gear meant for sporty uphill ski travel. In summer, the store will shift focus to trail running and hiking gear.
